Lalit Chordia

Lalit Chordia, Ph.D., is the president and founder of Thar Technologies, Inc., which specializes in commercial applications of high-pressure carbon dioxide process technologies. Carbon dioxide is physiologically safe, environmentally acceptable, and nonpolluting. It is ozone-friendly and does not contribute to the greenhouse effect. Lalit quickly realized the market potential of this supercritical fluid technology and founded Thar Technologies in 1990 with one employee to commercialize its benefits for dry cleaning and spice extraction, among many other applications. A supercritical fluid is a solvent that can be either liquid or gas, used in a state above the critical temperature and critical pressure where gases and liquids can coexist. It shows unique properties that are different from those of either gases or liquids under standard conditions. The biggest challenge in supercritical fluid technology has been in the area of equipment costs, given the high pressure and temperature under which processes are conducted. Thar Technologies has been successful in decreasing the cost of manufacturing by nearly 20 percent. In process development, Thar Technologies places special emphasis on reducing operating costs to keep the process economically viable.

Since its inception, Thar Technologies has been involved in the design, development, and manufacture of pumps, heat exchangers, and all other components that go into supercritical equipment. The company currently holds eight patents and has several pending. From one division and seven employees in 1995, Thar Technologies has grown to four divisions and 29 people in 2002. The company expanded significantly in 2001 and now has two locations in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Lalit has been fervent in supporting and developing traditional and new markets overseas, making his company one of the leaders in export activities in western Pennsylvania. As a result of Lalit's personal efforts and the detailed, hands-on assistance provided by Duquesne University's EX-TRADE program, Thar Technologies's export sales have skyrocketed, going from 6 percent in 1997 to 48 percent of total annual sales in 2001. Fifty percent is Thar Technologies's target for 2002. To achieve this, Lalit has participated in overseas trade missions, hosted foreign delegations of companies, attended trade shows, and lectured at international conferences and symposia. He has been an active participant in several trade missions led by the Pennsylvania governor's office and the U.S. Department of Commerce. In November 2000, Lalit joined a trade mission to Argentina, Brazil, and Chile. He also obtained a market access grant to attend a trade mission to Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. The grant is given by the Office of International Business Development at the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.
Lalit's management philosophy has made Thar Technologies an outstanding company and global leader in its field. He is committed to the long-term development of international markets, having embraced the value of exporting and international investment. His commitment to quality and an exceptional line of products has enabled his company to leverage these assets and become a truly global company. In 2001, Pennsylvania acknowledged Thar Technologies's export success by naming the company a finalist in the Governor's Export Excellence Award.

Not only has Lalit led Thar Technologies into the international realm but he has also helped other small businesses do the same. He never hesitates when another small business approaches him for advice on ways to enter overseas markets. Going beyond providing information, Lalit acts as a mentor and offers his foreign distributors and representatives as channels for other local small businesses. As part of his community commitment, Lalit serves on the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh, the Leadership Council of Pittsburgh, and the District Export Council. He is the founder of the U.S.-India forum, which promotes business and political cooperation between the two countries.
Lalit, who was born in India, received his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in 1980 and his doctorate in chemical engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1985. Lalit has personally financed the 11-year presence of Thar Technologies with the help of one additional investor. He is an employer with significant impact on the economy. Thar Technologies provides an excellent standard of living for its employees by paying competitive wages and rewarding employee efforts. Truly, this is a man whose remarkable gifts in both science and commerce have enabled him to create a company of great reach. He has thought globally and acted locally to the benefit of his community, his state, his adopted country and the world at large.

Rob McAnally

Robert McAnally, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Appalachian Lighting Systems, Inc. (ALSI), says the most important lesson he learned from his previous jobs might have been simple—but it was also powerful: “There are solutions to any problem,” he recalls. “And the ideal solution is one that solves the problem once and for all.”

McAnally is trying to do just that at ALSI, an Ellwood City-based developer and manufacturer of high-powered and ultra energy-efficient LED streetlights and sign illumination as well as parking lot, warehouse, indoor office, and other specialty lighting.

Repurposing Lessons from Successful Career
Though McAnally’s brother David is president and CEO of the company, a history of success and expertise—not nepotism—led the former to ALSI.

McAnally, a Texas native who received an undergraduate degree in math and computer science from The University of Texas at San Antonio and a masters of science degree in management from Regis University, ran a business advisory group that counted Fortune 50 multinationals and the U.S. Department of Commerce among its clients.

“I had successfully led many technology projects, including hands-on projects in eight different countries, and my brother David knew I had a certain level of expertise in sorting operations and putting together operational solutions,” McAnally explains.

So, in 2008, McAnally began the interview—yes, interview—process, meeting with the entire ALSI team many times. They pressed him on how he would approach problems and meet challenges; what would inform his business philosophy; how he would formulate the company’s goals and bring true value to it.

After three months of talks, McAnally got the green light to join the management team of a company that is essentially about green lights.

Outshining the Competition
McAnally says that even with “hundreds and hundreds” of companies doing what ALSI does, his company consistently rises above its competition.

“The secret sauce is balancing energy efficiency with reliability and price,” he says. “By doing that, we’ve won more than our share of sales.”

ALSI products utilize only LEDs, which means they operate without a incandescent bulb’s filament; instead, they pass electricity through a solid state compound that produces light. That technology allows for an astonishing 70 to 80 percent decrease in energy consumption when executed properly.

The ALSI difference is that their products solve an inherent problem that LEDs encounter: they produce heat. And the more heat they produce, the shorter their lifespan. ALSI tackled the problem head-on by creating a variety of patented energy design features, the most notable being an advanced passive cooling process.

“The maximum temperature we allow is half of what our competitors allow,” says McAnally. “The process is a trade secret—but third-party validations have proved that our thermal goals can be achieved with the right materials and design.”

What all this means for customers’ bottom line is that the cost of installing the lights is more than underwritten by the savings the lights produce; in fact, McAnally reports that, with ALSI’s Energy Solutions program, a typical customer can have ALSI’s products installed with no out-of-pocket expenditures over the program’s 10-year period, and enjoy substantial reductions in their electricity bill.

This sort of innovation was what ALSI’s Founder and Chief Science Officer, James Wassel, envisioned. Wassel’s dedication to rigorously testing each new design has won ALSI some big clients since it started doing industrial installations almost five years ago. Some of them include the Pittsburgh International Airport, Allegheny County Jail, and Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh, with new work coming from a community college, a multinational manufacturer located in Ohio, and clients as far away as the U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada.

Next Up: Products That Last a Generation
McAnally says that a typical day on the job entails staying on top of production, checking in with suppliers (ALSI typically creates component specifications for the products they want to produce then has suppliers create them.), helping out with marketing and sales, and servicing high-profile accounts. Yet even when he’s knee-deep in the logistics of running a business, McAnally never loses sight of why he enjoys his job so much.

“The satisfaction of watching the company grow and prosper in the midst of recession is immense,” he says. “Despite those constraints, we’re winning contracts and gaining momentum because of our world-class products.”

McAnally is excited for the future of ALSI, a company that from the get-go has been primarily self-funded. First, there are all the new projects and products on the horizon: ushering along several major pending contracts and bringing two new customer-requested products to life. Then there’s a bold goal of creating products that will last at least 20 years.

“Our goal, within in the next two years, is to design, build, and sell lighting products that will last a generation,” he says. “Today, people replace a bulb after nine months, but there’s no reason we can’t design products that your children replace a decade later.”

Kelly Wylam

Having worked for the PA Department of Community and Economic Development for 14 years, Kelly Wylam knows a thing or two about helping nurture technology companies throughout the state. While working in the DCED's Technology Investment Office, Wylam was in charge of the state's nanotechnology initiative and provided oversight for the Ben Franklin Technology Development Authority's University Grant Funding and Keystone Innovation Starter Kit programs.

It's easy then to believe Wylam when she espouses the virtues of the Innovation Partnership, a one-of-a-kind way of connecting young companies and new innovators in PA with federal technology funding. When IPart was conceptualized in 2002, a cultural change was being sought--promoting more interaction among the many organizations promoting technology commercialization statewide.

"It's a unique collaboration," says Wylam, the director of IPart, which is primarily funded by DCED and the Ben Franklin Technology Development Authority, with financial and in-kind support from its partner organizations. "It's beneficial that we've brought all these organizations to the table to provide assistance. We have people interacting where they need to be interacting."

Since 2003, the consortium of a dozen organizations, including the likes of Ben Franklin Technology Partners, the Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse, Penn State University and the University City Science Center, has leveraged about $900,000 in MicroGrants, MicroVouchers and Federal Marketing Assistance funds to help Pennsylvania companies land more than $18 million in federal money. Most of the federal funding has come from the National Institutes of Health, which has made 29 awards totaling about $7.5 million, and the Department of Defense (21 awards totaling $5.4 million). Other prominent funding comes from the National Science Foundation and Department of Homeland Security.

Now well-known PA companies like Y-Carbon and Piezo Resonance Innovations can count federal funds among the numerous financial validations they've amassed. In fact, companies applying for federal dollars using IPart's assistance have achieved a success rate that is five percentage points better than the national average. Keystone Edge talked to Wylam about the process.
