From Artist to Entrepreneur – Making the World a Little More Beautiful Every day

When Freddie J. Bainbridge walked into the Duquesne University Small Business Development Center (SBDC), he brought with him more than an idea — he brought a life shaped by creativity, craftsmanship, and the desire to make the world more beautiful. That vision would soon become Bainbridge Painting & Art, the foundation for what is now known as Bainbridge House, the creative home and signature brand of artist, painter, and interior transformation specialist Freddie J. Bainbridge.

Freddie’s artistic journey began years before his business ever had a name. He graduated from The Art Institute of Pittsburgh with honors in 1989. His talent for visual expression—through paint, color, textures, and spatial transformation—naturally evolved into requests from friends, neighbors, and community members seeking help beautifying their homes. Over time, the demand for his artistry grew, and Freddie recognized an opportunity to build something lasting. He founded Bainbridge Painting to meet that growing demand. Like a lot of creative businesses, he needed assistance in pricing, marketing and monetizing his creativity.

He turned to the Duquesne University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) for guidance in navigating business planning, branding, digital strategy, and the operational foundations needed to turn a passion into a sustainable enterprise. Through one-on-one consulting, the SBDC supported Freddie as he shaped his vision into a viable business with purpose, structure, and momentum. His mission is simple, yet powerful: To make the world a little more beautiful every day.

Recently, Freddie completed his artist-in-residence at the Stifel Oglebay Institute. This was a tremendous honor, being one of only 3 artists accepted. During his three-month residency, he taught classes, and created 16 paintings using beeswax and pigment, including works inspired by the Wheeling Suspension Bridge. Freddie focuses on layered, textured, and ethereal landscapes.

The collaboration between Freddie Bainbridge and the Duquesne University SBDC illustrates what can happen when creativity meets guidance. Freddie brought passion, talent, and vision; the SBDC helped provide structure, tools, and strategic support.

Together, a natural gift was transformed into a thriving business. Bainbridge Painting & Art and Bainbridge House now stand as inspiring examples of what is possible when artists become entrepreneurs—and when small business owners have the right partners behind them.
