Duquesne University SBDC Meets with Pittsburgh Leadership to Strengthen Support for Small Businesses

Pittsburgh, PA – February 2026 - The Duquesne University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) recently met with Mary McKinney Flaherty, Deputy Director of Economic Development for the City of Pittsburgh, Office of Mayor Corey O’Connor to discuss new opportunities for collaboration in support of the region’s small-business community.

During the meeting, Rich Longo, Director of the Duquesne University SBDC, provided an overview of its service - including business planning assistance, financial analysis, market research, and early-stage entrepreneurial support - highlighting how these resources contribute to business growth and job creation throughout the city.

Mary McKinney Flaherty expressed a shared commitment to strengthening Pittsburgh’s economic ecosystem. The conversation explored ways the two offices can work together to:

  • Enhance outreach to entrepreneurs in Pittsburgh neighborhoods
  • Connect new and existing businesses with no-cost advising and technical assistance
  • Coordinate resources and referrals to streamline support for local entrepreneurs
  • Promote joint workshops, events, and community education
  • Economic development that benefits residents and local communities

The meeting underscored the value of aligning municipal economic development efforts with Duquesne University SBDC’s network of business support services. Both offices emphasized the importance of accessible, practical guidance for entrepreneurs - especially those navigating the challenges of starting or growing a small business.

This collaborative dialogue marks a positive step toward building a stronger, more connected small-business support system across Pittsburgh. The Duquesne University SBDC and the City of Pittsburgh look forward to continuing their partnership to help local businesses thrive and contribute to the economic vitality of the community.
